Large geomatics contract with Statistics Canada and Elections Canada
Statistics Canada and Elections Canada have engaged DMR to develop the second version of the National Geographic Database (NGD) editor. This $700,000 project of over 1,000 person days must be completed by January 2009.
During the makeover of the NGD, DMR's role will be to build a geographic information system (GIS) that will simultaneously update the national road network (over 2.5 million road segments) and census blocks formed from the same network (over 500,000 blocks). The update includes the editing of the geometry of the roads and blocks and that of the descriptive data associated with the roads and blocks.
The NGD was created mainly to support census and electoral activities. It contains especially basic mapping elements (hydrography, railroads, etc.) and a complete assigned road network (street names, address ranges, etc.) covering all of Canada.
It should be mentioned that Intelec Geomatics, which headed the creation of the NGD in 1997, is still involved in the project because it is now part of DMR's Land Management and Geomatics business unit.
