Defence: a Single Command and Control System

The Director Land Command Systems Program Management (DLCSPM) has awarded DMR a contract to define and integrate the target architecture for the Tactical Command and Control Information System project.

The goal of this project is to assist this military organization with the development of a command and control system that will support forces deployed in a theatre of operations. DMR is also responsible for coordinating and integrating the architecture work of three other service providers involved in the project, which are working remotely.

The issues? The system must support both fixed and mobile user environments, such as headquarters, the tactical command post, combat and support vehicles, as well as soldiers outside vehicles, on a tactical network infrastructure (radios).

A system based on an innovative architecture

DMR's experts developed an innovative architecture that exploits service oriented architecture best practices. It is characterized by the integration of the client/server and service oriented approaches in an event-driven distributed system. This approach provides for flexible implementation and guarantees that the systems will survive in a degraded operating mode.

The architecture is also modeled on the UML 2.0 standard. It integrates the modeling and documentation of system requirements with those of architecture design, which ensures fast, effective traceability. Moreover, to validate the architectural guidelines and principles, DMR is responsible for developing an integration framework based on.NET 2.0 technology and various other components in the form of prototypes.
